Susan Simkins
Although Susan was born in New Jersey, she lived most of her life in Las Vegas. The Southwest gave her a great appreciation for Western and Indian art and her love for collecting it eventually inspired her to create her own. She fell in love with painting which eventually led her to try working in a three-dimensional medium. This lead to her interest in Gourd Art in which she is self taught. Studying work by various artists drew Susan to a contemporary Southwest style, especially works by Native American artists. She now lives in Sedona where she enjoys the natural beauty and vibrant arts community. “Each of my gourds is hand-painted. I try to preserve the natural state of the gourd because I love variations in texture, imperfections on the surface and other notable characteristics.” |
