If, as the saying goes, the past-is-prologue, then the Sedona Arts Center has a very bright future indeed. As the longest established arts organization in our region, for fifty years we have served the arts, educational and inspiration needs of Sedona and surrounding communities. In just the past twelve months, our attendance reached nearly 60,000 visitors studying in classes and workshops, shopping at our Fine Arts Gallery, attending world-class art exhibitions and savoring the sensations of the annual Plein Air Festival.
A central focus of our one acre campus is the rustic Art Barn dating back to days when Sedona was an agricultural hub for apples and other crops. Amid space where apples were once packed into crates, magnificent painting, ceramics, metalwork, drawing and other art works are now created. Since becoming the Sedona Arts Center, we have attached additional buildings to the Barn to accommodate events, overflowing classes and storage, and reconfigured the interior and exterior numerous times to keep the property in usable shape, all to serve the high volume of those whom we serve.
But time has finally taken its toll and we must face a reality that radical improvements are required within the next 3 to 5 years if the Sedona Arts Center is to have adequate and safe facilities to serve our tens of thousands annually.
The Board of Directors and other community leaders have embarked on a visionary plan to re-imagine the Arts Center, launching it into the future while paying homage to past achievements. Our Capital Campaign Committee is reviewing potential land use, new conceptual designs and fund raising strategies. A study will likely be conducted in 2010 to determine the scope and feasibility of this new future vision. Funding sources are already being identified, along with plans to accept bequests and name facilities in honor of generous contributors.
