The Magic of Crystalline Glazes Tuscany Style
Luca Tripaldi
Sept 11 - 18 2010

Come join us in the hills of beautiful Tuscany at the ceramic school 'La Meridiana'. Students will explore the fabrication of their own handbuilt or wheel-thrown ceramic forms using a porcelain clay body while learning to create a surface receptive to unique Crystal Glazes. Crystalline glazes have a magical quality. The slightest movement causes light to dance across the surface of the crystals, revealing layered depths of color and texture in a constantly changing rhythm. The challenge and fascination of this glazing technique is to recreate the process of crystalization that in nature can take thousands of years. Our instructor will also invite us to create unique ceramic jewelry applying this special glaze technique. Students will share housing in the beautiful setting of a traditional Italian villa 'Il Testimonio' enjoying access to the nearby towns of Florence, San Gimignano, Siena, Pisa, and Certaldo. Non-student partners and spouses are invited at a reduced rate.

Painting Tuscany
with Robert Burridge
Sept 1 - Sept 8, 2012

Join Robert Burridge for an exciting painting workshop in Tuscany. Discover the actual painting "high" of Van Gogh, Manet, Monet and others. See for yourself why painting outdoors was (and still is) so popular. This on-location and studio painting workshop is for all levels of painters who want to learn the time-honored joy of painting & sketching outdoors and finishing up in the studio.

Starting in a controlled studio environment you will paint and practice the principles for why and how to paint & sketch outdoors using acrylics, how to setup and prepare for the outdoor plein air experience. Travel to the site and set up your outdoor "studio," painting all day with watercolor. (watercolor is the preferred medium for outdoors -- it's a simpler set up) Back in the studio, using acrylics, we commit to paper or canvas and paint what we have visually imprinted, sketched and photographed. This course will teach you all the basic principles to paint trees, clouds, meadows, mountains, water and abstract landscapes.
